So
you say you
want a
boxer?
Do you really think you have what it takes to be a good boxer own? Not
just another dog owner?
Understand, I am not saying you can't do it but. Let’s weigh this all
out...
Okay let’s take a look at the BOXER!
It's all in the name BOXER!
Well there is a lot behind the boxer, it was breed by crossing
The bullenbeisser mastiff and the bulldog together, they say there were
a few others who add to the gene pool but these two did allot of what
you see to day.
So just commonsense say's this is a nice size dog.
Males usually weight is 60 to 71 pounds and are 22 1/2 to 25 inches tall
and females 50 to 55 pounds and 21 to 23 1/2 inches tall,
Yes you will run across boxers that are too small or to big,
(Dane like) or to fat
and then there are those that are hard to keep weight on. But if you’re
in the market to buy a boxer, and you do your home work you should be
able to get something close to standards. There are lots of people out
there working to keep with in the guild lines of the boxer standards.
And then there are "those that don’t you'll know who they are. Not by
the way they "chew there gum, but they way they blow their bubble"
Look for someone who can show you with there dogs where there coming
from. Don’t just listen to all the chit-chat. They need to be able to
show there stuff. And I am not saying every boxer needs to go, or be in
a show ring, to tell the truth there are lots of people who own pet
boxers that would "take the ring" if you know what I mean. I have seen
dogs in the ring; winning that makes me want to cry...but I’ll keep that
to myself. "That’s where the home work comes in”. You don't have to own
a rose and a daisy to see the difference.
Keep in mind we are talking about you getting a boxer! A BOXER! That’s
right,
So how do they act?
Let’s just start with; it's not going to be just lying on the porch at 2
years old "like Paw Paw's bloodhound at 2 years old, where you have to
bring his food to him where he's so lazy. And you’re not going to be
picking them up and caring them under your arm like Aunt Maryann dose
with her two Chihuahua
Yapping at everyone they see thinking they can
beat the world.
The boxer is a good dog, one of the best if you ask me, 'but I am
impartial' .They make great family dogs, they are good with kids. They
can be little rough while they are a puppy 8 weeks to 1year. Jumping on
everyone they see. With the right approach this can be fixed. But keep
in mind boxers think they have to be with people all the time. And they
think they have to be touching you.( leaning on you - stepping on your
feet - jumping on you - putting there head some times there legs on you
while you are sitting). This is a very social dog. And you are never
going to be able to give then too much attention.
Boxers are great dogs! But you and every one else and there mother wants
to start with a puppy.
And that is fine. But are you ready for all that, A little boxer baby is
going to do? This is going to change things around your house. Your new
puppy will cry all night long. And even louder on nights you really need
sleep. They will chew up every thing left down at there reach. They will
potty in the house five minutes after you just brought them back in from
out side. As they grow they will rip screens out of windows if left lose
in the house, while you are gone, looking for you to come back. They
will dig holes in the yard. They will also up set neighbors, in the
darnedest. ways. Barking, getting lose, chasing there cat, digging their plants out, you get the
idea.
So what are you going to do, to make sure you can handle a boxer
that as it grows it will keep challenging you? Are you ready? There are
things that can happen, health wise, the list can be long.
Are you willing to love this new boxer puppy as a family member enough
to see it through any heath problems it may have? Let’s face it. You
could have 3 healthy kids. And one day bam there it is an illness that
no one in the family has ever had. You know what you have to do and you
do it. What I am saying is, I am not god and I can not tell you with all
the health testing in the world that your boxer will never come down
with something. Are you ready to take on a new boxer?
The only thing I can tell ya is that with lots love and time you can
have one of the best friends anyone could ever have. I want you to
think long and hard before taking on a new boxer. I like my boxer
puppies to get a home and keep it! If this sound likes it’s going to
be to much work in anyway, then I would say, you might want to get some other kind
of pet.
